New "Training for Life and Work in Ireland" Programme in Waterford

- An Initiative by Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme and Local Partners

Sláintecare Healthy Communities, in collaboration with an extensive network of local organisations, has launched a ground-breaking initiative titled "Training for Life and Work in Ireland." Specifically designed for adult migrants in the Southeast, this 12-week programme offers holistic training in various life skills essential for successful integration into Irish society. The programme will be hosted at Turas Nua's office in Waterford, aiming to offer practical guidance ranging from English language skills to navigating the Irish health and housing system.

The Aim and Scope of the Programme

This pilot training aims to prepare migrants for life in Ireland, focusing on securing employment, entering self-employment, initiating social enterprises, or seeking further education and training. The primary areas of focus will include Access to Education & Employment, Life Skills, and Health & Wellbeing.

The training will run for 12 weeks, with sessions held three days a week—Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday—from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.

Partnerships

A diverse range of organisations have pooled their expertise to ensure the success of the "Training for Life and Work in Ireland" programme. Waterford City and County Council will offer guidance on community living, government, and local council affairs, as well as issues related to energy savings and access to housing. The Waterford Wexford Educational Training Board will focus on English language assessment and teaching, IT skills, an overview of the educational system, and career guidance. Turas Nua is set to equip participants with practical job-searching skills, such as CV writing, cover letter creation, and interview techniques.

The Health Service Executive's Health Promotion unit (HSE HP) will cover important aspects of mental health and lifestyle changes, while the Department of Social Protection will educate participants on their entitlements under DSP. Waterford Sports Partnership will handle the physical activity segment, and Sacred Heart Family Resource Centre will cover topics related to parenting and healthy eating. Waterford and South Tipperary Youth Service will provide insights into how the Irish health system functions.

Waterford Local Enterprise Office will offer crucial guidance on self-employment, while the Trade Union SIPTU will address the issue of employment rights. Waterford Volunteer Centre will cover the ins and outs of volunteering and community work. The South East Regional Skills Forum will focus on identifying skill sets and potential work placements, and finally, the South East Technological University (SETU) will be responsible for project evaluation, with the potential for the programme to be rolled out elsewhere.

Community Impact

With an extensive list of affiliates and supportive organisations, the Training for Life and Work in Ireland programme promises a comprehensive, well-rounded curriculum for adult migrants. This initiative not only highlights the community's commitment to fostering inclusive growth but also provides migrants with the resources they need to navigate life in Ireland successfully. Turas Nua is proud to not only host and partake in the rollout of this training in Waterford, but also in collaborating with multiple community organisations to help others.

This initiative seamlessly aligns with Turas Nua's ongoing efforts to assist individuals in transitioning from welfare to work, offering a comprehensive range of services from CV writing to interview preparation. The "Training for Life and Work in Ireland" programme naturally complements these existing services, extending our commitment to equip clients with the skills and knowledge they need for a successful integration into both employment and Irish society as a whole.

Just 32% of people with disabilities in Ireland are employed. Learn how Turas Nua supports employers to build inclusive workplaces and close the gap. October is Disability Employment Awareness Month, a time to reflect on progress, but also on the challenges that remain. In Ireland, the disability employment gap is the widest in Europe. The European Disability Forum (2023 ) indicates that only 32% of people with disabilities are in work, compared to the EU average of 51%. People with disabilities are more than twice as likely to be unemployed as non-disabled peers. Inclusion is a social priority, but it’s also a national challenge.
